Can You Believe it? |
|
The life of a dog trainer is full of unexpected and
strange things. When I tell people about some
of the things I've seen and heard, a look of disbelief crosses most
faces.
The following stories actually happened. See what you think. — Doug
A couple of years ago I sent an instructor over to the house of a
possible client. After the registration he stated to her that he
had heard some stories about Doug Morrison.
She
immediately asked what they were.
He said that he'd heard that for discipline he rents a helicopter and
takes the dog up to 200 feet
and throws the dog out of the aircraft, to show him who the boss is.
He stated that he doesn't
want anyone doing that to his dog.
My Instructor immediately said, there was no way Mr. Morrison ever
took dogs to 200 foot. that
would be inhumane. He only took them to 50 feet and threw them out. That is why the corporate
colors are red. The floor at Mr. Morrison's school was always painted
red so you couldn't tell if the dog was bleeding or not.
The customer said , "I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT!" Needless to say he didn't
join the school.
This is the grand daddy of them all. It's a true story.
1) I walk into a client's house and the dog meets me at the
door. He immediately shoves his
nose into my crotch, and the owner says, it's ok, he's just checking
you out......
2) A young child crawls on the floor towards the dog while he
is eating his meal. The child gets
closer all the time. The dog suddenly snaps at the child. The parents
say they will just have to
watch the child and make sure he doesn't get to close to the dog while
he is eating.
3) A woman was telling me that her dog had bitten the mailman.
After many questions I found
out that the mailman put his hand out to pet the dog and was bitten.
The lady said that the dog
didn't really bite him, but that the mailman got his hand caught in
the dog's mouth.
4) A woman was playing with her dog, and the dog bit her on the
hand and continued to hold on. The lady told me that the dog wasn't
really aggressive towards her, he was just playing and
didn't want to let go because he wanted to play some more.
5) I'm over at a lady's house and the dogs suddenly starts to
bark at the owner. The owner gets
down on hands and knees and starts to bark back at the dog. I'm
thinking to myself , this is
different. The owner looks at me and says, I look pretty stupid, don't
I. What could I say. I said
yes. The owner says the Vet. told her to do this.
6) I receive a phone call from a lady who tells me that her dog
is starting to rip her furniture
apart. I suggest that she should think about crating her dog. She
immediately tells me that I am a cruel sadistic person, and she won't
put her dog in jail. She hangs up the phone. About 2 months later I
get a phone call from the same lady. She is very upset and crying on
the phone. I go over to house and there she is sitting on the floor
crying. Her beautiful leather chair, sofa and love seat are completely
destroyed. Total amount of damage is $15000.00. She is now using a
crate.
7) I enrolled a lady and her dog into the basic obedience
program. she had already gone to a
very well known school in Ottawa. One that the Vets recommend on a
regular basis. After
asking a lot of questions I found out the whole story. the dog was
very afraid of loud noises.
This lady happened to be living right in downtown Ottawa, where a lot
of construction was going
on. Every time she took her dog out for a walk the dog would be very
afraid. She asked the
instructor, ( dog trainer ) for help. The trainer stated to her that
she would have to move to an
area where there were no noises to disturb the dog. Guess what? She
sold her house and
moved to the country. HELLOoooooo.
8) I was called by a lady who had some aggression problems with
her dog. One of the reasons
was that the dog had too much freedom in the home. The dog was allowed
to do what she
wanted to do at any time she wanted to do it.
Remember, if you can't make your dog do what you want it to do in the
house, you certainly
can't make the dog do what you want it to do outside of the house.
The more problems you have, the more you have to restrict the dog. I
told her that this was not
the dog's house. The dog has to earn the right to call it her house.
She quickly stated that, "NO, this is the dog's house, in fact we
bought the house because 'my baby' (the dog), likes to look out the
windows." I started to cry as I ripped up the cheque she had given me
for an obedience course. I told her to please take the dog to another
school.
"Training the dog is the easy part, training the person is the hard
part."
9) I went over to a lady's house to enroll her dog in the
family dog program. I found out that she
had already been through two levels of obedience with another well
known school.
The Instructor/owner of the school stated that this was the most
stubborn dog she had ever
seen. The owner had wanted to enroll the dog again, in the same
school.
Guess what?
I found that the dog was as deaf as a stone.
